The sea is salty partly because rivers carry minerals from rocks into it.

Rain slowly wears down rocks on land, and rivers carry the dissolved salts to the ocean. Some salt also came from the sea floor and from gases released from inside the Earth. On average, seawater is about 3.5% salt.
