Tiny ocean plankton make about half of the oxygen produced by photosynthesis on Earth.

Phytoplankton use sunlight to make food, just like land plants, and release oxygen as they do. Much of that oxygen is used up again by life in the ocean, but without plankton the planet would be very different.
