One of the longest words in English dictionaries was made up by puzzle fans.

Pneumonoultramicroscopicsilicovolcanoconiosis (45 letters) was invented in 1935 by Everett M. Smith, president of the National Puzzlers' League. Members then campaigned to get it into major dictionaries.
